Synopsis:
The Counting Race is a story about Mrs. Connor’s first grade class. The class is excited to have a race because they love races! Until they find out they are having a counting race. Mrs. Connor told the class that she wants to see if they can count to ten in one second. A few children try to do it but they cannot get all the way to ten. Finally one of the students asks if the class can work together on it and give it one more try. Mrs. Connor agrees and the students work hard to figure out a way. Finally the students tell Mrs. Connor that they are ready. The students at the same time count to ten by twos! Mrs. Connor was very proud of her class because they figured out a faster way to count.
Pre Reading Activity:
Before reading have the children practice counting to ten and see how long it takes them. The students can get into pairs and see who can count to ten faster.
Post Reading Activity:
After reading have the students figure out other ways to count. For example count by fives and see how far they can get in one second.
Reflection:
I enjoyed this book because it is a math book that children can enjoy. A lot of students do not enjoy math and this is a low level book that will make math sound fun. Most kids love racing, this book has them racing to count! This is a fun and enjoyable way to learn math skills!
